The taper fade is one of the most popular hairstyles for men. Taper fades offer a clean and masculine look that is easy to take care of and it is appropriate in a casual or professional setting. Taper fades are also popular because it goes with any hair length and type. Longer on top, buzz cut, straight hair, or curly hair…a taper fade goes with anything. That being said, it is important to understand what we mean by a taper fade. There are many variations but below is the general idea of what a true taper fade is. Technically, a fade and a taper are two different cuts and styles. They refer to how your barber will cut your hair on the sides and back of your head. The difference is that taper haircuts are usually longer than fades. Classic tapers are typically done with scissors while fades are done with clippers. Tapers begin with at least an inch of hair length and slowly gets shorter down the hairline. In contrast, a fade starts with short hair and blends down to very short hair, sometimes cutting down right to the skin. This is where the taper fade, a combination of the two cuts and styles, come into play. With a taper fade you will be getting longer hair on the sides that is buzzed super short and bald to maximize contrast. From there you can ask your barber for specific preferences like a low vs high taper fade and/or how long you want your hair on the top. Whatever your preferences are, when you ask for a taper fade, your barber will use clippers to trim and gradually blend your hair shorter and shorter as it goes down the sides and back of your head. This my friends is the taper fade. For examples of what a true taper fade looks like visit our social media pages. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @mugshotbarbershop.
