Happy New Year from our team here at Mugshot Barber Shop. We hope you enjoyed the holiday season with your loved ones. Now that the holidays are over, let’s talk about what we care about the most – HAIR! Today we’ll keep it simple. Here is an overview on how to properly care for your hair. Shampoo: Shampooing removes dirt and debris that collects on your scalp. It also emulsifies excess sebum and product residue. Shampooing will leave your hair fresh and free of gross microfauna. Though shampooing should be part of your hair care routine, you should not shampoo every day. Generally, it’s advisable to wash your hair twice a week, or every other day if your hair and scalp are prone to oil build-up. On days that you don’t shampoo, simply rinse your hair with warm water and this will help remove salts and residue from any water-soluble styling products like gels. Some of the best shampoo products for men are Aesop, Acqua Di Parma, Crew, and Kerastase. Conditioner: Much like how moisturizer restores all-important moisture to skin, conditioner restores to your scalp the moisture a shampoo strips away. Often times conditioner is thought of as a female product or for those with longer hair styles. However, the benefits of using conditioner can be reaped by all men regardless of hair length and type. Aim to use conditioner every time you wash it with shampoo – so twice a week or every other day. For those who have particularly dry and/or coarse hair, leave-in conditioners might be worth investing in. Leave-in conditioner is useful when you are trying to add moisture to hair and/or looking for a style aid throughout the day. Some of the best conditioner products for men are Baxter of California, Living proof timeless, and Men-U. Hairstyling: Last but certainly not least, we’ll discuss hairstyling. There are two things you must remember. 1) Less is more. While you can always add more product, remember that you can’t take excess away (besides, of course, washing your hair and starting all over again). This applies to all products regardless of how light and soluble they are. Use only enough to get your hair where you want it to go. 2) Take a break. Overuse of hair products can actually negatively affect the condition of your hair. Just like your muscles, you don’t want to work them every single day. They need rest. Give your hair rest days when possible. If you wash, dry, and use styling products on you hair every day, you should aim to give your hair one or two days rest per week so that it has a chance to breathe free from products. Popular hairstyling products for men are pomade (Baxter of California, OUAI, Uppercut, and Crew), styling cream (Malin+Goetz, Windle & Moodie, Crew, and Tea Tree), and of course…gel (Kiehl’s, Kera Care, and Shockwaves). Hopefully these new tips will help you better care for your hair this year. For more information on caring for your hair, stay tuned on our blog or visit us at Mugshot Barber Shop.
